Location and accessibility:
The Droogbak is located west of Central Station. Near the CS, there are several tram, bus and metro lines as well as several ferries crossing the IJ. The property can be reached via the Spaarndammertunnel (S101) and it is possible to park on the opposite side in Q-Park Amsterdam. The Haarlemmerstraat with various shops is very nearby and on the corner is the well-known café Kobalt.
Monument and destination:
The properties are both municipal monuments and also part of the Grachtengordel Amsterdam which is therefore on the Unesco World Heritage List. The rear house and the corridors to the rear house are designated as Garden-3 on ruimtelijkeplannen.nl in accordance with the plan map; the rear house has long been in use as housing.
History:
Droogbak an ancient name for a street or rather former quay here. It was a former quay of the IJ. Droogbak 7 and Droogbak 8 are two similar buildings built in 1878 by the firm P Hegener en Zn. On the square was the Amsterdam Westerdok Station between 1878 and 1889, here were railway lines towards Haarlem and Zaandam. When Central Station opened, Westerdok Station was closed. A fountain, in the shape of a starfish, was placed on the Droogbak in 2000 to complete the restoration of the De Droogbak building.
